OPEN CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS to our bi-monthly eZine - The Sirens Call

Women in Horror Month - Issue #19
'Whispers in the Dark'

For the third year in a row, we are dedicating our February issue of The Sirens Call eZine to Women in Horror Recognition Month. We'll only be accepting short stories, flash fiction, and a limited number of poems from women for this issue. (GENTLEMEN, please see the last paragraph)

The criteria:

Your submission must be a work of HORROR fiction revolving around the theme of 'Whispers in the Dark'. A whisper can be a spoken word, a breath on your neck, a faint stir of the breeze, or even the hint of a rouged cheek. Be creative; think outside the box for this one.

The type of horror pieces we are looking for are psychological, monster/creature, ghost/haunting, alien/otherworldly terror, or just a damn scary tale!

The type of horror we do NOT want are stories of abuse and revenge - just revenge is okay if there is enough horror in it, but no 'wife beater' tales for this one, please.

Deadline: February 3, 2015

Short story word count: 1,000 - 2,500
Flash fiction word count: 300 - 1,000
Poem length: minimum 10 lines; maximum 50 lines (with a limit of five poems per author)
Drabbles: 100 words (requirement of three acceptable drabbles per author/limit of five submitted)

Reprints are acceptable as long as you currently hold the copyright.

All submissions MUST be submitted to: Submissions@SirensCallPublications.com

As for our GENTLEMEN writers - you guys will have to sit this one out again, but we have a wonderful idea plucked from the ether and reserved for the April issue which will be solely for you this year. It's not in competition with WiHM, but we do believe in fair play. And don't bother asking what the theme is ahead of time because we're not telling; we're savoring the anticipation until the beginning of March!

eZine Submission guidelines:

Submission deadline is midnight, February 3, 2015 (Pacific Standard Time).

WE DO NOT ACCEPT WORKS containing pedophilia, human bestiality, or overtly descriptive/graphic rape scenes.

Current OPEN SUBMISSION CALL:

Mental Ward: Experiments

(Anthology: Extended Call/Payment Structure Change)

The elevator doors open, the lights are flickering, the gurney is wheeled into a dank, dimly-lit hallway well below ground. Does the Doctor have the patient's best interests at heart, or is something more nefarious going on? How does the staff figure out what treatments are most effective and which are not?

In our other two Mental Ward collections, we asked you to tell us what happened above ground in the institute itself; what memories of the past were trapped in the abandoned hallways; now we're asking you to tell us what goes on behind closed doors. The secret experiments that are feared and whispered about among the patients. Tell us what unthinkable things greed, the corruption of power, and the desire to be remembered will drive a Doctor to do to the unfortunate patients left in their care.

Tell your tale from whoever's perspective you'd like, just make sure the story you tell is a depraved one.

Note: This is a reopened anthology. Your story must contain the following three elements to be considered:

  1. Your story must take place in a Mental Asylum or Institution.
  2. Your story must involve individuals from the Asylum: doctors, nurses, patients, maintenance staff, etc.
  3. Your story must contain what would be considered an inhumane experiment that is physically performed.

Word Count: minimum 4,000 words; maximum: 8,000 words.

Payment: $25 per story selected for inclusion.
